If you’ve used our meal kits, you’ve likely heard about our ReUse program. We use the term “program” loosely because it’s more of a friendly partnership between us and you. Even though it’s not all formal and official, it’s still something very important to us.
Why ReUse?
Meal kits are great– they are convenient and fun but one of the biggest drawbacks, as both a business and for potential customers, is that they can create a lot of waste. This is something we are constantly working on as a business. We want to be conscious and mindful of our environmental footprint, but there’s no way around using some single-use items for food safety. What we can control, though, is how we handle the packaging we use to deliver your meals.
That’s where our ReUse program comes in. We decided that instead of tossing out the big cardboard boxes, foil liners, and ice packs after every delivery, we’re giving them a second life.
How It Works
- What’s in the Box: When your meals arrive, they are packed in a large cardboard box with an insulated foil liner. We add a mix of ice packs and a foam sheet to keep everything cool and fresh.
- Returning the Box: When the next delivery day rolls around, you can leave the empty box, foil liner, and ice packs by your front door. Our delivery driver will pick them up while dropping off your new goodies and bring them back to the shop.
- Our Cleaning Routine: Once back at KP, we check the boxes to make sure they’re still in good shape, remove any extra tape, and give the liners and ice packs a thorough clean. We then store the boxes to let them dry and freeze the ice packs so they are nice and cold for the next round of deliveries.
A Few Tips
- What to Send Back: We only need the big delivery box, foil liners, foam sheets, and ice packs to recycle. You can toss out the small brown boxes and any plastic containers or bags at home—those are for one-time use only.
- Ice Packs: No need to freeze the ice packs before returning them–they’re easier to clean and store once they are thawed out.
- Box Flaps: Please leave the flaps of the delivery box un-folded. Folding them too much can cause rips or tears making the box unusable.
This has been a continuous journey. We have tested lots of different cleaning methods, taping techniques, and materials over the years and have slowly been able to improve our process to be more efficient and get more use out of our supplies but, the most important factor to make all of this work is you, our customers! By putting out your boxes each Monday, you help us keep this recycling loop going. It’s a team effort, and we couldn’t do it without you.
Thank you for being a part of our mission to stay green and make a positive impact. We appreciate your help more than you know 🌍💚
